Seven Trojans move to second round
COUNCIL BLUFFS - The seventh-ranked NIACC wrestling team advanced seven wrestlers to Friday's second round in the first session at the NJCAA national championships at the Mid-America Center.
NIACC picked up falls from Cruz Aguilar (125) and fifth-ranked Deville Dentis (149) in their first-round matches. Second-ranked Jose Valdez (197) picked up a technical falls and Ein Carlos (174) won in overtime.
NIACC's ninth-ranked Clarence-Lee Green (133) and Quentrevion Campbell (141) received first-round byes and top-ranked Christian Minto (165) moved on with a medical forfeit (no match).
NIACC's Josh Barretta (157) and seventh-ranked Chase McCleish (184) dropped first-round matches.
In Carlos' first-round match, Carlos took an 8-6 overtime decision from sixth-ranked Jameel Coles of Northwest Kansas Tech. Carlos tied the match with an escape in the final seconds of regulation and then gained a takedown in extra time to advance to the second round.
At 125 pounds, Aguilar pinned Cowley's Robbie Rosser in 3:28.
At 149 pounds, Dentis advanced to the second round with a 1:28 fall over Barton's Dawson Chavez.
At 184 pounds, McCleish dropped a 10-9 decision to sixth-ranked Jarvis Echols of Bryant & Stratton. McCleish trailed 10-1 heading into the third period and rallied to trim the deficit to 10-9 in the final seconds receiving four near-fall points as time expired.
