NIACC moves 5 to district finals
CENTERVILLE - NIACC's Clarence Lee-Green (133), Quentrevion Campbell (141), Deville Dentis (149) and Christian Minto (165) and Jose Valdez (197) moved to the finals at Sunday's NJCAA North Central District Tournament at Lakeview Elementary.
In the 133-pound semifinals, Lee-Green topped Iowa Western's Camden Russellv 5-4. Lee-Green (11-5) avenged a 12-10 loss to Russell earler in the season.
In the 141-pound semifinals, Campbell (9-1) topped Iowa Central's Darnai Heard 8-3.
In the 149-pound semifinals, the fifth-ranked Dentis (10-3) knocked off Ellsworth's fourth-ranked Nathan Lendt, 4-2. Lendt had topped Dentis 7-4 in a match earlier this season.
In the 165-pound semifinals match, the top-ranked Minto (10-0) won by injury default over Iowa Lakes' Dominique Johnson.
In the 197-pound semifinals match, the second-ranked Valdez (11-0) took a 23-7 technical fall from Iowa Western's Michael Aguirre. Valdez also topped Aguirre 14-5 during the dual-meet season.
In the 125-pound semifinals, Iowa Western's fourth-ranked Jakason Burks topped NIACC's Cruz Aguilar, 6-3. Burks also topped Aguilar 16-7 during the regular season.
In the 184-pound semifinals, Iowa Western's third-ranked Josh McFarland topped NIACC's seventh-ranked Chase McCleish 7-2. It was McFarland's second win over McCleish (14-5) this season.
Lee-Green placed second at the 2021 district tournament and was fifth at the district meet in 2020. Lee-Green dropped a 5-2 decision to Indian Hills' Chris Busutil in the 2021 district title match.
Lee-Green, who is ranked ninth, faces Indian Hills' top-ranked Caleb Meekins in the 133-pound district title match. Meekins pinned Lee-Green in :36 in a dual meet earlier this season.
Campbell will be seeking his second straight district title. Campbell claimed the 141-pound district title in 2021 with a 6-3 win over Indian Hills' Victor Guzman.
Campbell, who is not ranked, faces Iowa Western's sixth-ranked Creighton Baughman in the 141-pound title match. Campbell owns a 2:00 fall over Baughman earlier this season.
Dentis faces Iowa Central's third-ranked Keaton Geerts in the 149-pound title match. This will be the first meeting this season between Dentis and Geerts.
Minto faces Ellsworth's ninth-ranked Khaitov Mirzo in the 165-pound title match. Minto owns two victories this season over Mirzo (6-5 and 7-2). Minto will be seeking his third district title.
Valdez will face Iowa Lakes' top-ranked Massoma Endene in the 197-pound title match. Valdez nipped Endene 2-1 during the dual-meet season.
Valdez will be seeking his second straight district title.
