Trojans win RedTail Women's Invite
- NIACC wins tourney for first time since fall of 2024
- Knutsen places third in individual medalist competition
WATERLOO - The NIACC women's golf team won the Hawkeye CC RedTail Invitational on Monday at Sunnyside Golf Course.
The Trojans won the 3-team invitational with a team score of 372. College of DuPage placed second with a 399 and host Hawkeye CC was third with a 405.
"It was a great day to play golf, finally," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said, "and Sunnyside was a great course to play."
It was NIACC's first team title since it claimed the Hawkeye CC Redtail Fall Classic on Oct. 4, 2024.
NIACC freshman Avery Knutsen placed third in the individual medalist competition with a round of 86, which was a 2026 spring season low. Iowa Central's Syeda Laiba Shah was the individual medalist with a low round of 84.
Knutsen's previous best round this spring was 89 twice at the Iowa Central Spring Invitational on April 10-11.
"After a slow start, Avery Knutsen really put together a fantastic back nine," Frenz said. "That will give her a ton of confidence heading into the next two tournaments. Her iron game was spot on."
Also for the Trojans, sophomore Danielle Randick shot 93, sophomore Kenedee Frayne shot 95, sophomore Addy Boell shot 98 and freshman Emma Topp shot 99.
"It was a diffucult scoring day for everyone overall," Frenz said, "but this is the type of course that requires patience and good course management, similar to Otter Creek (regional tournament course).
"So this was a good test for us."
NIACC will be back in action Friday at the Waterloo Intercollegiate at Gates Park Golf Course.
