Trojans shoot season-best 333
MASON CITY - The NIACC women's golf team recorded its best round of the fall season Tuesday by shooting a 333 at the NIACC Fall Invitational.
The Trojans placed third with their 333. Iowa Central was the team champion with a 320 and DMACC was second with a 322.
NIACC's previous best round of the fall season was a 351 on the second day of the Mount Mercy Mustang Fall Invitational.
"It was a great effort out of the team (Tuesday)," NIACC coach Chris Frenz said. "We've had a very difficult start to the season with a lot of tournaments in a short amount of time, but they've made great strides and (Tuesday) scored very well as a team."
Freshman Avery Knutsen led the Trojans with a career-best round of 80, which was fifth in the individual medalist competition. Knutsen's previous best round this fall was a 91.
"Avery Knutsen was outstanding (Tuesday)," Frenz said. "She's been waiting to bust out and she di so (Tuesday)."
Also for the Trojans Tuesday, sophomore Danielle Randick shot a career-best 83, sophomore Addy Boell shot a fall-season best 85, freshman Emma Topp shot 85, freshman Audrey Overgaard shot 86, sophomore Kaiya Holten shot a career-best 89 and sophomore Ashlyn Berven shot 89.
"I'm extremely encouraged by everyone on the team," Frenz said. "If we get that kind of effort from the top five, we'll be tough to beat.
"While we're disappointed we didn't win, we 100 percent are trending in the right direction. Kaiya Holten, playing as an individual, had her best round (Tuesday). I so happy for her as she's really improved from last year and her attitude is tremendous and is a great team player."
NIACC returns to action Sept. 17 at the Simpson College Invitational in Indianola.
Team standings - Iowa Central 320, DMACc 322, NIACC 333, Waldorf University 341, Hawkeye CC 393.
