NIACC splits pair of matches at own tournament

MASON CITY - The NIACC volleyball team split a pair of matches Saturday at the NIACC volleyball tournament in the NIACC gym.

NIACC (10-16 overall) dropped a 3-2 decision to the Grand View University Junior Varsity in its first match of the day. The Vikings won 24-26, 24-26, 25-16, 25-20, 15-10.

The Trojans topped the St. Ambrose Junior Varsity 3-0 winning by the scores of 25-20, 25-16, 25-19.

"Ultimately, we had a pretty good day," NIACC coach Chris Brandt said. "We have been working pretty hard on some individual goals statistically to help our overall game, as well, as keeping the energy high throughout the matches.

"Lots of great learning opportunities and growth (Saturday)."

NIACC freshman Hannah Brinkman had 25 kills and five blocks in Saturday's matches. Freshman Megan Tobin had 21 kills, nine digs and four blocks.

NIACC's Emma Miller had 17 kills, 20 digs, two assists and one block. The Trojans' Emily Opstvedt had 42 assists, 12 digs and two ace serves and Kenedee Frayne had 35 assists, 13 digs and two kills.

Also for the Trojans, Addison Tabbert had 24 digs and one ace serve, Jaden Jerome had three digs, Alicia Machacek had 12 kills, four digs and four blocks and Destiny Reasner had 35 digs, seven assists and one ace serve.

NIACC's Kit Byars had eight kills and nine blocks and Alana Burton had one kill and one block.

NIACC returns to action at home Wednesday against Southwestern CC in an ICCAC contest. Match time in the NIACC gym is slated for 7 p.m.
