NIACC sweeps Northeast CC
MASON CITY -- The NIACC softball team wrapped up its regular season with a doubleheader sweep of Northeast CC Sunday afternoon on the NIACC campus.
NIACC won the first game 6-1 and completed the sweep with a 12-4 six-inning win in the second game.
After Sunday's contest, the Trojans honored sophomores Mya Bunkers, Ally Wall, Makayla Wirkus, Katie Riesselman and Maren Sauvageau and freshman Anna Fairchild, who will also graduate.
NIACC wrapped up its regular season with an overall record of 38-21 overall and 23-13 in the ICCAC. The 38 wins ties the school's all-time single-season record for wins.
The Trojans were 38-12 in 1992 under hall of fame coach Tom Dunn.
With the five sophomomres, the Trojans are 73-44 in their two seasons, which is the most wins in a two-year span in program history.
In the opener, NIACC freshman left-hander Chloe Thurlby gained the win in the circle. She tossed a one-hitter with eight strikeouts.
NIACC's Aubrey Chapman hit a two-run home run.
Also for the Trojans, Wall, Riesselman and Addie Rhoades all collected two hits.
In the second game, Wall gained the complete-game win. She allowed four runs on six hits with five strikeouts.
Bunkers, Wirkus, Rhoades, Emma Wall and Kennedi McGarvey all had multiple hits. Rhoades, who had two doubles, drove in five runs. Emma Wall and Riesselman both had doubles and Bunkers hit a home run.
NIACC opens regional tournament play on May 1.
