NIACC's Scanlan, Williams win Coe Invite titles
CEDAR RAPIDS - NIACC's Chris Williams and Cory Scanlan won individual titles Saturday at the Coe College Invitational.
Williams, a freshman, won his title at 141 pounds and the sophomore Scanlan was the 157-pound champion.
NIACC freshman Nicky Bernard was second at 184 pounds and the Trojans, sophomore Alejandro Rodriguez placed fourth at 125 pounds.
NIACC's Marco Guzman was fifth at 197 pounds, Grant Henderson was sixth at 285 pounds, Bryan Weston was eighth at 174 pounds and Corbin Hill was eighth at 197 pounds.
In the 141-pound bracket, Williams (7-2) pinned his way to the finals and then claimed the title with a medical forfeit win over Coe College's Dresden Grimm. Williams pinned Grand View's Emilion Casillas in 4 minutes, 56 seconds, pinned Cornell's Owen Adlfinger in 3:43 and stuck Millikin's Colin Clayyed in 1:20 to reach the finals.
In the 157-pound bracket, Scanlan took a 12-1 major decision from Cornell's Nolan Howell in the title match.
Scanlan (7-2) opened the tournament with a 9-6 sudden victory over Cornell's Andrew Parrish. Scanlan topped St. Ambrose University's Georgino Moraga 9-3 in the quarterfinals and took a 7-3 decision from Grand View's Henry Figueroa in the semifinals.
At 184 pounds, Bernard (7-3) placed second at a Saturday tournament for the second week in a row. Bernard dropped a 9-0 major decision to Millikin's Kody Marschner in the title match.
Bernard, who placed second at the Luther College Open on Nov. 15, moved to the finals at the Coe College Invitational with a 21-16 win over Coe College's Justin Wirtz and a 10-2 major decision over St. Ambrose's Jean-Luc Guerra.
NIACC (2-0 in duals) returns to action Dec. 3 in a dual meet at Indian Hills. Match time in Centerville is slated for 7 p.m.
