No. 2 NIACC wrestlers place 3rd at Under Armour Invite

PELLA - The No. 2 NIACC wrestling team placed third at the Central College Under Armour Invitational on Saturday with 100 points.

Host Central College was the invitational champion with 112 points and University of Wisconson-Platteville was second with 101 points.

NIACC crowned two champions in the gold division. Sophomore Tony Mendoza was the 149-pound gold champion and freshman Christian Minto was the 165-pound gold champion.

Mendoza (11-2) won his title match by injury default over Central's Robert Areyano. Minto edged Graceland's Drew Sams 5-3 in his title match.

Minto (13-0) remained undefeated in his collegiate career with four wins Saturday. Minto gained a fall in his opening round match and claimed the 165-pound title with decisions in the quarterfinals, semifinals and finals.

Also for the Trojans, Clarence Lee-Green was third at 125 pounds, Hunter Luke was second at 141 pounds, Cody Klettheimer was fourth at 174 pounds, Holton Truax was second at 197 pounds and Zack Santee was fourth at 285 pounds.

Santee, who is ranked second in the NJCAA at 285 pounds, saw his first action of the 2019-20 season on Saturday. He picked up decisions in his first two matches before medical forfeiting in his final two matches and placed fourth.

NIACC returns to action Tuesday in a ICCAC dual meet at Iowa Lakes.
