Large school East remains perfect in all-star series
MASON CITY - The Large School East squad improved to 3-0 at the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association all-star series Saturday night with a 6-4 victory over the Large School West team.
In the other game Saturday at Roosevelt Field, the Small School East topped the Small School West 6-3.
Large School East faces Large School West in Sunday's title game at 12:30 p.m. Small School East faces Small School West in the consolation game at 10 a.m.
Ottumwa's Parker Thode gained the win for the Large School East on Saturday. Thode allowed two runs with nine strikeouts and three walks in seven innings of work.
The two large school teams were tied 2-2 after four innings. Large School East broke the tie with a single run in the top of the fifth inning and pushed its lead to 6-2 with two runs in the sixth inning and a single run in the seventh inning.
Large School West plated two runs in its half of the eighth inning, but that was as close as the West would get in the final game of the round robin portion of the four-day tournament.
In the first game Saturday, the Small School East picked up its first win of the tournament with three runs in the third inning, two in the fifth frame and a single run in the ninth inning.
Mason Newhard and Javin Drake combined to hold the Small School West to three runs. Newhard pitched four innings allowing one run and Drake threw five innings and allowed two runs.
Drake struck out six and did not walk a batter in his five innings of work.
