Shawn Schlechter begins his sixth season as an assistant coach for the NIACC baseball team.

Schlechter became a student assistant for the NIACC baseball program for the 2013 season. In the 2014 season, Shawn became a full-time assistant coaching and took charge of the catchers and outfielders while also assisting with offense and recruiting.

Schlechter served as the catchers and outfielders coach for the 2015 and 2016 seasons. Both teams won regional tournaments, district titles, and made NJCAA Division II World Series appearances. Schlechter assisted 2 catchers reach the Division 1 level in that time span. (Zach Fricke- University of Iowa and Blake Whitecotton- Creighton University) Schlechter also assisted with offense during those seasons as well.

Schlechter became NIACC’s hitting coach in 2017. Schlechter worked with the talents of former NIACC sluggers Robbie Glendinning, Malique Ziegler, Troy Bullingham, Austin Ladoux , and Spencer Halloran. All players combined for a total of 73 doubles and 93 home runs in the 2016 season alone. Three of these players went on to sign to play Division 1 baseball (Robbie Glendinning- University of Missouri, Troy Bullingham- Creighton University, Spencer Halloran- Houston Baptist University) Another became NIACC’s first ever draft pick when selected to play professional baseball in the 22nd round of the 2016 MLB draft (Malique Ziegler- San Francisco Giants) Schlechter will also serve as the 3rd base coach and assist with recruiting.

 During the summer months of 2016, Schlechter took on the role as the head baseball coach at Garner-Hayfield-Ventura high school. The team finished with a record of 18-12. This was the first season that the team posted a winning record since 2008. Schlechter and the GHV Cardinals brought home the Top of Iowa Conference-West title for the first time in school history, finishing with a 13-3 record in conference play. Schlechter went on to be named the 2016 TIC-West Coach of the Year after their successful season.
Outside of coaching baseball at NIACC, Shawn holds a job on campus working in the Campus View Housing. He also works as a hitting instructor at an indoor training facility in Mason City called The Yard.
